There's nothing as refreshing as having a nice piece of fruit, such as a banana. Fruits look so yummy that sometimes your dog might take interest in what you're eating. But can they eat bananas?
If you like fruits, you probably love bananas. Bananas are one of the most popular fruits world-wide! We eat them daily in our: cereal, oatmeal, and smoothies, along with many other snacks.
Bananas have been adopted as the go to (healthy) in between meal snack, and for good reason. They are not only good for you, but a quick and easy snack.
If you eat bananas and own a dog you’ve probably stopped and asked yourself “can my dog eat bananas?”
Its not a bad thing to question what you are feeding your dog, its your responsibility to keep them healthy.
If you’re reading this its probably because you questioned whether or not your dog could eat bananas.
So lets get started and answer the big question!
Can Dogs Eat Bananas?
Its hard to know everything about your dogs health. So you might run into some questions when it comes to what is healthy for them or what isn’t.
Bananas are one of many fruits we eat that our dogs eyes and stomach seem to fixate on.
If you have a dog, then you know how hard it is to say “no” to them if they’re begging. Its almost as if some sort of puppy magic is at work.
So, if you couldn’t resist your dogs sparkly eyes and gave into giving them some of your banana, its okay…This time. (You should always look up whether or not something is okay for your dog to eat, before feeding it to them).
If you researched “can dogs have bananas” you would soon find out that YES, they can! Not only can dogs eat bananas, they can actually have many health benefits from consuming them
Even though dogs can eat bananas, its good to monitor their intake, and keep it moderately low (used mostly for a snack).
Who Said They Were Bad?
Its not certain who started the idea that bananas could be bad for your dogs. but there is definitely no scientific evidence to support such a claim.
Although, the person who ignited the spark to this rumor might have experienced issues after feeding their dog bananas.
But, this would only happen if you gave your dog WAY too many bananas.
Its true that if you give your dog too much banana they might experience stomach issues, but that happens ANY time you eat too much of something…
If you cant properly monitor your dogs nutrition/intake of bananas, then maybe you should remove it from their diet.
Are Bananas Good For Dogs?
First of all, lets just once again establish that dogs can eat bananas, and bananas can be good for dogs.
These delicious creamy yellow fruits are not only a yummy treat, but also comes with health benefits. Bananas are a great source of
- vitamin C
- B vitamins
Although bananas are high in sugar they are a good source of fiber and a well rounded healthy snack.
While your dogs can eat bananas in moderation, I would not recommend letting them eat the banana peel.
Even though the peel does contain nutritional value (and isn’t toxic for dogs), the high amounts of fiber it contains can be hard for some dogs to digest.
That said, there is nothing “unhealthy” about eating bananas, so giving your dog a piece as a treat or reward is a great way to keep them happy and healthy.
The Bottom Line
Although you shouldn’t feed your dog bananas with every meal, they can benefit from having them as a snack.
Not only are they yummy treats that your dog will always enjoy, they actually are a great source of nutrients.
We don’t know where the myth that ‘bananas are bad from dogs’ came from, but we DO know that its wrong. Your dog can benefit MORE from having bananas in their diet, than if they didn’t.
Also, there are SO many dog treat recipes that include bananas. You can freeze them, add them to peanut butter, or even just add them to your dogs food.
Either way your dog will always appreciate the creamy refreshing bite of a banana.
As long as you watch your dogs bowel movements, you should be able to tell if they can digest bananas OR if they cant…
If they cant, then simply stop feeding them bananas.
But, if you don’t see your dog experiencing any stomach issues then you know you hit jackpot and found a new yummy snack for your dog.
